Trackhouse Racing has pulled Connor Zilisch’s car from Sunday’s Cup race at Watkins Glen after he broke his collarbone in a fall during victory lane.
Zilisch shared on social media that he was grateful for the quick response from medical staff and relieved that his head scans came back clear.
At just 19, Zilisch made headlines after winning his sixth Xfinity race of the season. Unfortunately, his celebration took a turn when he fell off his car and was placed on a backboard and neck brace for safety, before being taken to a local hospital. Fortunately, he was released later that night, according to JR Motorsports.
Zilisch was set to drive the No. 87 car in his fourth Cup race, having qualified in 25th place. He currently leads the Xfinity Series standings, just seven points ahead of teammate Justin Allgaier. With only three races remaining in the regular season, Zilisch’s performance has been impressive. The next Xfinity race is scheduled for August 22 at Daytona International Speedway.
In recent times, injuries in sports have raised concerns about athlete safety. The National Safety Council reports that nearly 2.3 million people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for sports-related injuries in 2021. Experts suggest better training and safety measures to help prevent accidents like Zilisch’s.
