Conor McGregor has settled a lawsuit with his former teammate Artem Lobov concerning profits from the whiskey brand Proper No. 12.
On Wednesday, Lobov’s lawyer informed the court that they had reached an agreement, so the case won’t go to trial. However, details about the settlement remain private.
Lobov originally sued McGregor claiming he was owed 5% of the sales from Proper No. 12. He insisted he had a verbal agreement to help launch the brand, a claim McGregor denied.
The whiskey brand was sold to Proximo Spirits, known for owning Jose Cuervo, for a whopping $600 million in 2021. McGregor reportedly made over $100 million from this sale.
Initially, McGregor was the face of Proper No. 12. Yet, as time passed, Proximo distanced itself from him following a court ruling in Ireland that found him liable in a civil case regarding an alleged sexual assault from 2018. Lobov voiced that he felt pushed out after Proper No. 12 began to thrive.
After the settlement was announced, McGregor thanked Lobov for his contributions to the whiskey business through a statement read in court. He expressed that he was now focused on making a comeback to fighting, aiming for a return this summer.
It’s notable that McGregor and Lobov were once close allies, training together in Ireland. Lobov stood by McGregor during a notorious incident in 2018 when McGregor attacked a bus in a heated confrontation with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The lawsuit strained their friendship, but now that it has been resolved, both can move forward.
Presently, McGregor is gearing up for his return to the UFC, his first fight in five years after a severe leg injury in 2021. All eyes are on the upcoming UFC 329 in Las Vegas, scheduled for July 11, where he is expected to headline the event.
Recent statistics show that the spirits market, especially whiskey, continues to grow. According to a report by IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, the global whiskey market is projected to reach approximately $100 billion by 2023. McGregor’s venture into this realm has certainly played a role in highlighting this booming industry.
As the dust settles on this legal battle, both McGregor and Lobov may find new paths ahead, possibly shaped by their past collaborations.
