In New Delhi, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is at the center of a heated debate. A notice about serving ‘beef biryani’ instead of chicken biryani for lunch at the Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall sparked outrage on social media.
The notice, claimed to be issued by two authorized students, said the menu change was made due to popular demand. This announcement quickly stirred strong reactions among students and led to significant online backlash.
After the uproar, AMU officials stepped in to clarify that the notice was a result of a “typing error.” They stated that those behind the notice received a show-cause notice for their actions. An AMU representative explained, “The notice had no official signatures, which raised questions about its validity. We acted quickly to withdraw it.”
Initially, the university did not comment on the issue. But as the situation worsened, they labeled the incident an “unintentional mistake.” The provost of the hall also issued notices to the two senior students who circulated the message.
Amid this controversy, BJP leader Nishit Sharma, who is also an AMU alumnus, criticized the university’s response. He called their handling of the situation shameful and claimed it reflected poorly on the administration’s role in ensuring student conduct.
This incident raises important questions about food preferences and campus policies. It highlights the challenges universities face in balancing diverse student needs and maintaining harmony within their communities.
