Cory Patterson Joins Kansas State as Running Backs Coach
Cory Patterson has just been announced as Kansas State’s new running backs coach. With eight years of experience at major college programs and a successful high school coaching background, he’s ready to step into this key role.
Before joining Kansas State, Patterson coached the running backs at Oklahoma State in 2025. He also spent time at Illinois, coaching both tight ends and running backs, and served as the associate head coach at Purdue, mainly focusing on wide receivers.
“I’m thrilled about this opportunity,” Patterson expressed. “K-State has a rich tradition of great running backs. We aim to continue that excellence!”
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Patterson began his coaching career at the high school level. He first assisted at Christian Brothers and then Trinity Catholic, where he achieved a remarkable 27-6 record as head coach, even winning a state title.
Patterson has a solid track record of developing players. During his time at Illinois, he coached running back Chase Brown, who had an impressive performance in 2022. Brown rushed for 1,643 yards and scored 15 touchdowns, ranking him among the nation’s best. After his success, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals and has been a starter for two seasons now. Brown’s standout performances included gaining over 200 yards in multiple games.
In 2019, Patterson also helped Illinois make a return to bowl games after a five-year hiatus, including an unforgettable upset against No. 6 Wisconsin, showcasing his coaching impact.
Last year, while at Oklahoma State, Patterson mentored five running backs who collectively gained 1,172 yards and six touchdowns. His coaching strategies are backed by results, making him a valuable asset for Kansas State.
Patterson’s journey began not on the field but in corporate accounting. He often volunteered at a local Boys & Girls Club, coaching youth football, which ignited his passion for mentoring athletes.
He played college football at Lindenwood University before an injury cut his playing career short. He graduated with a degree in finance, showcasing his diverse background.
Patterson and his wife, Tiffany, have two daughters, Nyla and Nori.
With a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to developing young athletes, Cory Patterson is set to make a significant impact at Kansas State.
