Washington – In a recent chat on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Senator Lindsey Graham discussed a potential solution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He suggested that both nations might need to exchange some territory to reach a peaceful resolution. This idea aligns with comments from former President Donald Trump, who has proposed land swaps as a way to benefit both sides.
Graham acknowledged a reality: “Ukraine isn’t going to push out every Russian, and Russia isn’t taking Kyiv.” He believes that some land exchanges could occur, but only after Ukraine receives strong security guarantees to deter further Russian aggression. He emphasized the importance of reminding President Putin about the consequences of further invasions, referencing the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Russia’s invasion in 2022.
During the interview, Graham supported the notion of Trump meeting with Putin in Alaska to discuss a ceasefire, expressing hope that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could join the talks. He said, “You can’t end a war without talking,” highlighting the need for all parties to participate in any agreements.
Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker reinforced this idea, saying, “There can’t be a deal that everyone doesn’t agree to.” He explained that any territorial exchanges must reflect the reality on the battlefield, rather than simply giving away land.
Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s U.S. ambassador, echoed these sentiments, stating that Zelenskyy is open to attending meetings that promote peace. However, she criticized the notion of “buffer zones,” calling it an outdated concept, and stressed that the true line of conflict exists between good and evil.
