Could Gabriel Landeskog Make a Comeback for the Avalanche in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Gabriel Landeskog, the Colorado Avalanche captain, had a standout performance in the 2022 playoffs, racking up 22 points with 11 goals and 11 assists. He thrived on the ice, finishing with a team-high plus-15 rating during those intense 20 games. However, his journey since then has been challenging. After undergoing knee surgery in October 2022, he missed the entire 2022-23 season. In a bid for recovery, Landeskog opted for a cartilage transplant surgery on May 10, 2023. Sadly, this means he will also skip the 2023-24 season and into the 2024-25 season.

Landeskog’s injury woes don’t stop there. He previously dealt with a quad injury from a skate laceration sustained in the 2020 playoffs. He had knee surgery again on March 21, 2022, right before the playoffs began.

As the Avalanche prepares to face the Stars in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there’s buzz about Landeskog’s potential return. If he does lace up for Game 1, it will have been over 1,027 days since he last played. Despite the long absence, his teammates believe he brings immense value to the team.

“He’s versatile,” said Avalanche forward Charlie Coyle. “He can adapt to any style of play. Whether it’s skillful or physical, he excels in every situation. That makes him tough to go against. He has a unique combination of skills and work ethic that sets him apart.”

Since being selected as the second overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Landeskog has accumulated 571 points, including 248 goals and 323 assists, in 738 regular-season games. He’s also made a significant impact in the playoffs, scoring 27 goals and adding 40 assists in 69 playoff games.

Recent studies show that recovery protocols for athletes have advanced significantly, emphasizing the importance of tailored rehabilitation programs after major surgeries. For example, professional sports teams increasingly invest in sports science to enhance player recovery. This shift highlights a growing understanding of how critical these methods are for athletes like Landeskog.

As he works towards a comeback, many fans and experts are hopeful. The Avalanche will certainly benefit from his return, bringing not only skill but also leadership to the team.
