Could HBO Save ‘Poker Face’? Casey Bloys Reveals Talks About the Show’s Future!

HBO might be stepping in to save Poker Face.

During a recent presentation at Hudson Yards in New York, Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed that they had considered acquiring Rian Johnson’s show after it was canceled by Peacock. “We heard the original pitch,” he said. “When we learned Peacock wasn’t moving forward, we were curious. We’ve had talks, but nothing is confirmed yet.”

Poker Face, which starred Natasha Lyonne, was unexpectedly canceled after its second season. Even though the show received strong ratings and reviews, it turned out to be costly to produce. Reports indicate that Peacock decided to end it partly because producing at MRC Television, the studio behind it, wasn’t seen as a priority for NBCUniversal.

Despite the cancellation, Rian Johnson, along with MRC, plans to shop the show elsewhere. They want to bring in Peter Dinklage to replace Lyonne’s character, Charlie Cale, while keeping her as an executive producer. This idea of rotating lead actors every couple of seasons could give the show a fresh twist.

Johnson noted, “We’ve been brainstorming this move since writing the season two finale. We love Poker Face and think this is a fantastic way to keep it going. Just give us some time, and Charlie Cale might ride again.”

The end of season two left viewers on edge, with Charlie driving her Plymouth Barracuda off a cliff. Johnson humorously recalled how they crafted that cliffhanger. “Peacock was a bit nervous about the ‘To Be Continued’ line,” he said. “But I assured them it would be fine.”

Looking ahead, Johnson hasn’t started discussions for season three but feels optimistic. He stated, “You never know how things will evolve. I think conversations are about to begin, but I don’t want to count any chickens yet.”

Johnson, together with Tony Tost, who became showrunner this season, had the goal of keeping Poker Face engaging and fun.

As HBO moves forward, they have also announced new seasons for popular shows like House of the Dragon and The White Lotus, with exciting filming planned in France.
