Kyler Murray, the young quarterback who once made headlines in both baseball and football, is again stirring interest as he approaches free agency. The Oakland Athletics, a team that drafted him ninth overall in the 2018 MLB Draft, might be looking his way.
Athletics general manager David Forst mentioned to MLB.com that the door isn’t completely closed on a possible return for Murray. Even after he boldly chose football, becoming the No. 1 pick for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL, the A’s haven’t forgotten his potential. Forst noted, “Kyler is an elite NFL quarterback, and I’m sure there are plenty of opportunities for him to continue his football career.” He also expressed openness to discussing a baseball return, should Murray ever consider it.
At Oklahoma, Murray shone in both sports. In his last baseball season, he batted .296 with 10 home runs, while also winning the Heisman Trophy for football. Before he committed fully to the NFL, Murray had expressed a desire to potentially play both sports professionally.
Now at 28, it seems Murray is focused on football, particularly with teams like the Vikings, Dolphins, Jets, and Falcons reportedly interested in him. Though the baseball option appears to be on the back burner, the A’s remember him as “one of the most dynamic athletes” they’ve ever drafted, as noted by former executive Billy Beane.
As of now, there are no strong signals from Murray about returning to baseball. It will be interesting to see how his future unfolds in the NFL and whether he ever revisits his baseball days. For the A’s, the door remains open, proving they still have fond memories of what could have been.
