Could Local AI Be the Game-Changer for Robot Vacuums Facing Obsolescence?

During a recent presentation, Ecovacs showcased its new Deebot X11 OmniCyclone robot vacuum, emphasizing its on-device AI capabilities. This vacuum promises smarter cleaning, even without an internet connection. I later spoke with Ecovacs representatives to understand how independent it truly is from the cloud.

The Deebot X11 OmniCyclone can identify messes on the floor and decide how to handle them. It even adapts its cleaning routine based on your habits, making it highly personalized.

You can interact with its AI assistant, Yiko, in a natural way. For instance, you could ask Yiko to clean your bedroom every Friday. However, if your internet goes down, much of the app’s functionality is lost. You wouldn’t be able to control the vacuum remotely or access cloud features like saved videos.

Fortunately, there’s a workaround. The “Agent Hosting” mode in the Ecovacs Home app allows the robot to operate solely on its onboard AI. In this mode, it can recognize over 100 object types, cleaning your home effectively without any input from you. If it performs well in this mode, you might hardly use the app at all.

Without an internet connection, the Deebot X11 OmniCyclone can still adjust its schedule and cleaning methods. While it doesn’t fully satisfy the desire for smart home devices to function completely offline, it’s a positive step in that direction. As technology evolves, the hope is that even AI assistants will one day operate independently of the cloud.

This awareness is shaping the market, pushing companies to create more robust offline functionalities.
