Dallas Cowboys Secure Cornerback DaRon Bland with Massive Contract Extension
The Dallas Cowboys have just signed cornerback DaRon Bland to a four-year, $92 million extension. This deal keeps Bland, a vital player in the team’s defense, firmly on board.
Bland, who is 26 years old, expressed his desire to finalize the extension before the season kicked off. Discussions began during training camp in Oxnard, and he got what he wanted just days before the opener against Philadelphia.
Entering his fourth season with the Cowboys, Bland was initially in the final year of his rookie contract. With this new deal, he now ranks as the sixth-highest paid cornerback in the league, earning $23 million annually. This is a significant leap, especially given the ups and downs of his previous season.
In 2023, Bland made headlines by breaking NFL records. He returned five interceptions for touchdowns, the highest in NFL history, totaling nine interceptions for the season, along with 15 pass breakups and 69 tackles. For his outstanding performance, he earned both All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
Bland’s rookie season was impressive too, with five interceptions and 54 tackles, even though he started in just eight games. His ability to make an impact right from the start set high expectations for his future.
Now, with his new contract, Bland is secured with the Cowboys through the 2029 season. His versatility is crucial; he can play both in the slot and on the outside. This flexibility has proven important as injuries have affected the depth in the cornerback position.
Bland commented on his adaptability, saying, “I feel like I’m pretty adjusted into it now. It’s really just gelling everything together both inside and outside and showing I can do both.”
As the team gears up for their next game, if Trevon Diggs is active against the Eagles, Bland may switch to the slot position. If not, both he and Kaiir Elam will take the outside.
Thanks to this contract, Bland’s future in Dallas looks bright, and he remains a crucial element of a defense poised to compete at a high level.
