Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins recently suggested a creative solution to the rising cost of eggs: why not raise your own chickens? She shared this idea while appearing on Fox & Friends Weekend, and mentioned that she has her own flock at home.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Rollins emphasized the benefits of raising backyard chickens as part of her plan to lower egg prices. With egg prices hitting record highs—some areas report prices exceeding $10 for a dozen—many are feeling the pinch. The price surge is largely due to bird flu outbreaks that have significantly reduced the chicken population.
The impact of bird flu has led to fewer eggs on grocery store shelves, resulting in higher prices and even egg surcharges at some restaurants. From 2016 until late 2021, egg prices typically stayed around $2 a dozen, but they spiked to a striking $4.95 in January 2023, up from $4.15 just weeks earlier. Experts warn that prices could increase by another 40% this year.
While raising chickens sounds appealing, not everyone can take that route. Many people live in apartments or regions where local laws prohibit keeping livestock. Additionally, chickens can get sick, just like any other pet. For those who choose to go the backyard route, keeping chickens is not as cost-effective as it might seem. Experts have noted that, with the current prices of eggs, it might take years for the costs of maintaining a small flock to pay off.
Some social media users have voiced skepticism about Rollins’ suggestion. They point out the challenges that come with raising chickens, such as space limitations and the costs associated with their care. Keeping chickens can require daily attention, shelter, and feeding—all factors that can quickly add up. As one user noted humorously, backyard chickens often face unexpected health issues, resulting in high mortality rates. This all contributes to the idea that raising chickens may not be the easy solution many hope for.
In the face of rising egg prices, it seems that for now, many people will continue to look for solutions, even if raising chickens isn’t the attainable answer for every household.
