Veterans in Cedar Rapids are about to gain some exciting new mental health resources. The nonprofit organization CRUSH of Iowa is expanding its peer-to-peer support through a program called Operation Brotherhood. This initiative is designed for veterans and their families and will meet weekly at the CRUSH offices downtown.
One veteran, Charles Morgan, exemplifies the challenges many face. He joined the Marine Corps at just 17, following a family tradition of military service. However, after two years, he struggled with substance abuse as a way to deal with life’s pressures. “I use them to run away, as an escape,” he said. Morgan’s story highlights the need for community support, especially after a discharge.
Chad Neuleib, a retired Staff Sgt. and veteran liaison at CRUSH, understands these challenges all too well. He emphasizes the unique bond between veterans. “It’s the veteran to veteran camaraderie. It creates a different atmosphere for recovery,” he explained.
CRUSH’s executive director, Rod Courtney, believes that the timing of this program is crucial. With more military members returning home, the need for supportive services is increasing. “We need to step up services and let people know we are here,” he stated.
Morgan added that having veterans available at the recovery center is essential. “Finding someone who knows exactly what I am going through makes a big difference,” he shared.
The expanded program will kick off on April 7, and anyone is welcome to come by—no sign-up necessary.
In a recent survey by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, nearly 1 in 5 veterans reported experiencing mental health challenges after returning home. Programs like Operation Brotherhood are crucial in bridging gaps and providing the needed support.
As more veterans return home, initiatives like this one aim to create a strong sense of community. The shared experiences can foster healing and understanding—key elements for many on their journey to recovery.
