Eugene, Oregon – Track Day Highlights
The 2025 USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships kicked off at Hayward Field, showcasing incredible talent. Here’s what happened on the first day.
In the women’s 1,500 meters, former Colorado Buffaloes Rachel McArthur and Dani Jones shined. McArthur hit a personal best with a time of 4:04.80, finishing fourth in her heat. Jones followed closely, clocking 4:07.13 to qualify based on her time.
Val Constien, a two-time Olympian, easily advanced in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing second in her heat with a time of 9:37.56. Meanwhile, Sage Hurta-Klecker won her heat in the women’s 800 meters, finishing in 1:59.28.
In the women’s 10,000 meters, Abby Nichols finished 15th overall with a time of 33:38.06. She maintained a steady pace but dropped back towards the end of the race.
Jada Green, who holds the CU school record in javelin, finished seventh with a throw of 51.15 meters. She secured her place in the finals on her third attempt and improved on her fourth.
On the men’s side, Kole Mathison, the only current CU athlete competing, finished 13th in his heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with a time of 8:44.45. He did not advance.
Looking ahead, James Miholes will compete in the 400-meter semifinals. The finals for the women’s 1,500 meters and steeplechase will be held on Saturday, with the women’s 800-meter final on Sunday.
The Bigger Picture
This championship not only showcases talent but also prepares athletes for upcoming major events. Top performers will earn a spot on Team USA for the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships in The Bahamas from August 15-17 and the World Championships in Tokyo this September.
