Sandro Castro, the grandson of the late Fidel Castro, is stirring controversy online. As Cuba faces its worst economic crisis in decades, Sandro flaunts a life of luxury on social media. His lavish lifestyle sharply contrasts with the daily struggles of many Cubans.

At just 33 years old, Sandro has over 120,000 followers on Instagram. He shares posts of himself racing through Havana in high-end cars, hosting yacht parties filled with Cristal beer, and throwing exclusive parties at his trendy EFE Bar. Recently, he seemed to mock the severe blackouts that plague the city, which often last up to 20 hours. In one video, he touted Cristal beer as “medicine” while many in Cuba struggle to afford basic necessities.

Born into privilege, Sandro is the son of Alexis Castro Soto del Valle, one of Fidel’s five children. He grew up in an upscale neighborhood, while the average Cuban survives on around $16.50 a month. Sandro often vacations at posh resorts that charge nearly $100 a night, showcasing an extravagant lifestyle while his fellow citizens face food and medicine shortages.

Recent reports highlight the depth of Cuba’s economic troubles. According to a July report by Reuters, the country has lost 30% of its foreign currency revenue. This loss has led to rising prices and empty store shelves across the island. As a result, Sandro’s parties, where bookings can skyrocket to 15,000 Cuban Pesos, have sparked outrage among citizens who see them as a blatant disregard for their suffering.

This isn’t the first time Sandro has faced criticism. Back in 2021, he became notorious for driving a Mercedes-Benz during a pandemic lockdown, claiming it was borrowed from a friend.

Historically, the Castro name has symbolized revolutionary sacrifice and struggle. Today, however, it raises questions about privilege and inequality. Many feel betrayed by what they see as a disconnect between the legacy of Fidel Castro and Sandro’s lifestyle—one that feels more reminiscent of Miami than Havana.
