Cubs Bolster Rotation with Soroka Signing, Trade Two Prospects to Nationals

The Chicago Cubs recently made a move to bolster their pitching staff by acquiring Mike Soroka from the Washington Nationals. This trade, announced Wednesday night, involves sending two prospects to Washington.

Soroka, 27, has faced challenges this season. He’s recorded a 3-8 record with a 4.87 ERA over 16 starts and has led the league with 14 hit batsmen. He began his career with the Atlanta Braves in 2018, spent last season with the White Sox, and signed a one-year deal with the Nationals for 2025. Unfortunately, injuries kept him off the mound in 2021 and 2022. Overall, his career numbers show a 3.91 ERA in 85 games.

The Cubs are keenly looking to strengthen their pitching rotation ahead of the trade deadline. They’ve been missing key pitchers like Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon, and Javier Assad due to injuries. Soroka’s addition provides both depth and flexibility for the remaining games.

While his season statistics may not impress, his expected ERA stands at 3.32, indicating potential that the Cubs hope to unlock. In exchange for Soroka, the Cubs sent 25-year-old outfielder Christian Franklin and 18-year-old infielder Ronny Cruz to the Nationals. Franklin was hitting .265 with eight home runs in Triple-A, while Cruz had a .270 batting average with two home runs and ten stolen bases in the Arizona Complex League.

This trade marks a significant moment for both teams. The Cubs are aiming for a strong finish as they try to return to playoff contention, while the Nationals continue to rebuild their roster.
