CHICAGO — Cubs manager Craig Counsell decided to shake things up recently. He took a bold step by giving struggling left fielder Ian Happ a break. Meanwhile, center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong moved up to the leadoff spot.
“We just wanted a fresh look,” Counsell said. “Sometimes a change can help.”
Happ has had a tough time at the plate, going just 1 for his last 24. He struggles even more with runners in scoring position, hitting only .143 in those situations this season. His performance has contributed to the Cubs’ six-game losing streak.
“Ian really needed a day off,” Counsell added. “He’s feeling the pressure, and we have several players struggling right now.”
It’s not just Happ. Right fielder Seiya Suzuki is at .130 with runners in scoring position, and shortstop Dansby Swanson is only hitting .170 in similar situations. Despite ranking second in on-base percentage (OBP), the Cubs have fallen short in driving runners home lately.
Counsell acknowledged that these slumps can be confusing. “It’s tough to understand how you get into a rut and even harder to figure out how to get out of it,” he said. “It feels worse than it really is.”
Interestingly, the Cubs were one of the highest-scoring teams at the start of the season. But their recent struggle to score has dragged them down in the standings. They’ve lost four consecutive series, affecting team morale.
In response, the Cubs made some roster changes. They called up infield prospect Pedro Ramirez and outfielder Kevin Alcantara. While Counsell didn’t have plans for them to start immediately, he hinted they would get playing time soon. Alcantara, boasting 15 home runs in Triple-A, could add a much-needed spark.
“Kevin is on the roster,” Counsell mentioned. “When we can, we’ll get him involved.”
In addition to Crow-Armstrong’s new spot at the top of the order, second baseman Nico Hoerner moved down to fourth, with Michael Conforto filling in for Happ in the fifth spot.
Before making these decisions, Counsell reflected on past slumps. Historically, teams that adjust their lineups often find new life, sometimes turning a poor season around. These changes could either lift the Cubs or take time to show results. One thing is clear: the Cubs are searching for answers and a spark to revive their season.
With all eyes on the Cubs, fans are hopeful that these changes will bring a turning point. The team’s Twitter feed has been abuzz with reactions, from hope to frustration, reflecting the rollercoaster of emotions in the stands. As the season progresses, many fans will continue to watch closely, waiting for signs of improvement.
