Today, the Cumberland County Board of Education gathered for a retreat meeting. The main focus was to discuss the evaluation of the Director of Schools and the Board itself.
No decisions were made today regarding the director’s contract or the board members’ roles. This meeting was more about sharing information than making judgments.
However, the board did decide to form a committee that will look into evaluating both the Director of Schools and the Board of Education. This committee’s findings will be presented at next month’s meeting.
Scott Vanwinkle, the representative for the second district, initiated the motion for this committee. Three board members were chosen: Vanwinkle, Anita Hale from the fourth district, and Shannon Stout from the ninth district. Notably, only one of these members didn’t support the decision not to renew William Stepp’s contract.
Though the meeting was primarily for information, it was open to the public. Attendees had the chance to share their thoughts, especially concerning the decision about Stepp’s contract. Many voices echoed concerns similar to those expressed at the County Education Committee meeting. Some even suggested that there might be issues of corruption among certain board members.
