Dan Bongino, a former Secret Service agent, has been appointed as the FBI’s deputy director. This announcement came from President Trump, who praised Bongino as passionate about law enforcement and American values.
Bongino will work under Kash Patel, the new FBI director. Both men are known supporters of Trump, raising concerns among some Democrats about their impact on the agency’s operations amid rising national security threats.
The deputy director usually runs the day-to-day operations of the FBI. However, neither Bongino nor Patel has previous experience with the FBI. Their leadership comes at a tricky time for the agency, which has seen significant changes recently. The Justice Department has removed several senior officials and requested names of agents involved in the investigation of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Before becoming a political commentator, Bongino protected Presidents Obama and Bush. He became a prominent figure in conservative circles, often sharing false claims regarding the 2020 election, which have been refuted in courts and by former Attorney General William Barr.
In addition to his work on television, Bongino hosted a popular radio show following the death of Rush Limbaugh in 2021. He also has a well-known podcast, The Dan Bongino Show, which is a favorite among listeners on Spotify.
Bongino tried to enter politics, running for Senate in Maryland in 2012 and seeking congressional seats in 2014 and 2016. Unfortunately, he did not win any of these elections.
In a previous interview, Bongino criticized the Secret Service, calling for its reform after two notable assassination attempts against Trump last year. He emphasized the need for improvement to ensure safety.
Bongino and Patel are now stepping in to lead the FBI after a period of instability following the resignation of former director Christopher Wray at the end of the Biden administration. Wray had served since being appointed by Trump in 2017.
