Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has tapped Dan Ioschpe as the High-Level Climate Champion for COP30, the climate conference set for November 2025 in Belém, Brazil. Ioschpe, an entrepreneur and prominent business leader, will spearhead efforts to enhance climate action and support the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
Ioschpe, who leads Ioschpe-Maxion and holds board positions in several major companies, including WEG and Embraer, has an extensive background in business and environmental initiatives. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to connect Brazil’s climate priorities with private-sector actions. “I aim to support the COP30 Presidency in pushing forward climate action. We need to involve a wide range of stakeholders to tackle the energy transition, crucial for global development,” he shared.
Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, COP30 President-elect, praised Ioschpe’s experience, highlighting his success during Brazil’s G20 presidency in 2024. The role of the High-Level Climate Champion, introduced at COP21 in 2015, focuses on encouraging ambitious climate initiatives across all sectors of society.
Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC), emphasized Ioschpe’s role in forging partnerships to support the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C. The “Action Agenda,” which Ioschpe will lead, engages various actors, aiming to track significant progress in climate action by linking voluntary initiatives to national government efforts.
Recent statistics show that over 475 Action Agenda initiatives have already been launched in the first decade of the Paris Agreement, engaging more than 40,000 businesses and organizations globally. This momentum is essential as the focus shifts toward implementation, especially with the Global Stocktake presented at COP28.
“Ioschpe’s role will be vital in ensuring we move from promises to tangible actions,” said Ana Toni, CEO of COP30. His two-year term will involve collaboration with other climate leaders, including Nigar Arpadarai, the High-Level Climate Champion from COP29 held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
As part of COP30’s agenda, a Youth Climate Champion will also be selected from a group of 24 promising candidates, reflecting the event’s commitment to involving younger generations in climate action.
The global environment is changing rapidly. With each COP meeting, the stakes get higher, and Ioschpe’s leadership could be pivotal in harnessing the energy of diverse stakeholders to address climate change effectively.
