Dan Orlovsky Unpacks Why the Eagles’ Offense is ‘Predictable’ Following Disappointing TNF Loss to Giants

The Eagles are facing criticism for their offense, particularly after their recent loss to the Giants. Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky pointed out that the team’s predictability is hurting them. He noted the reliance on shotgun formations and how the placement of players like Saquon Barkley often reveals whether the play will be a run or a pass.

Lane Johnson, the Eagles’ right tackle, echoed this sentiment. He mentioned that being predictable can lead to setbacks in the competitive NFL. “We need to keep the defense guessing,” he said, emphasizing that their current play could be better. After starting the season 4-2, the Eagles’ offense has lacked the firepower that helped them clinch the Super Bowl title last year.

This season, the once star-studded lineup that includes Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith has struggled to perform at their usual level. The team has reportedly faced tensions among its receivers, who have amassed only 595 receiving yards combined this season. In contrast, Rams rookie Puka Nacua has almost as many yards by himself. Barkley, following a record-breaking year last season, is also seeing a drop in performance, averaging significantly fewer rushing yards per game this year.

Kevin Patullo is the new offensive coordinator, taking over from Kellen Moore. Some fans and analysts believe this change could contribute to a more straightforward offensive strategy that lacks creativity. This season, Philadelphia ranks just 17th in the league, averaging 23.7 points per game. In comparison, last year, they were among the top-scoring teams.

Despite these challenges, head coach Nick Sirianni defended the offense. He pointed to moments where they moved the ball effectively but admitted they need to reevaluate their approach. “We have to put our guys in better positions to succeed,” he said. “We will look at everything.”

Even Barkley disagreed with the notion that their plays are predictable. He suggested that execution and being in the right place are still key factors in success. Last year, defenses were well aware of the Eagles’ run-heavy strategy, yet the team still found ways to succeed.

The Eagles have a brief break before their next game against the Vikings. With ten days to regroup, they’ll need to address their offensive issues if they want to turn their season around.
