Students from Darlington College are excited to join a discussion with a House of Lords committee about the environment. They know their voices matter, especially on topics like climate change and drought.
Minha Butt, a science student, shared her excitement. She believes environmental issues don’t get enough attention. Stephen Ashfield, a lecturer at the college, nominated the students for this project. He wants them to analyze flooding, leaks, pollution, and water needs to provide valuable insights to the committee.
The committee’s goal? To understand if England will have enough clean water in 30 years. Mr. Ashfield is proud of his students. He calls them “proper scientists” who ask tough questions and genuinely care about their future. They will bring their findings directly to members of the House of Lords.
Darlington College is one of six schools chosen for this youth engagement initiative. Students will have the rare chance to express their views directly to decision-makers. Olivia Richardson, another student, emphasized the importance of young people’s voices. She noted, “We can’t vote yet, but we still have opinions.” This opportunity allows them to share their concerns about issues that will impact their lives.
The younger generation is becoming increasingly skilled at using social media to raise awareness about environmental issues. This ability helps them communicate effectively and spread their messages further than ever before.
Baroness Sheehan, chair of the committee, praised the quality of Darlington’s application. She looks forward to working closely with the students.
