Davenport University President Announces Retirement Plans for 2026: A Legacy of Leadership

CALEDONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Richard Pappas, Ed.D., will step down as president of Davenport University after 17 years of leadership. The announcement came from the university’s communications team on Wednesday.

Pappas reflects on his career with pride. He stated, “This decision wasn’t easy. However, I feel it’s time to pass the baton to someone who can take the university into its next chapter.” He has been an influential figure in Michigan’s educational landscape, serving as president for four institutions over 37 years.

Under Pappas’s guidance, Davenport University saw remarkable progress. Graduation rates soared by 200%, and student retention climbed by 32%. He introduced several key initiatives, including the College of Urban Education and the Casa Latina online bilingual program, highlighting his commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Additionally, Pappas prioritized student wellbeing, launching a new Wellness Center and expanding degree offerings in mental health fields. Under his leadership, the bachelor’s degree programs grew from 23 to 37, and graduate programs expanded from nine to 31.

Before joining Davenport, Pappas held presidential roles at National-Louis University in Chicago, Lake Michigan College, and Hartford Community College. His plans to retire on June 30, 2026, mark the end of an era for the university.

As the Board of Trustees prepares to find his successor, they face the challenge of building on a strong foundation laid by Pappas. His tenure has set high standards for future leaders in higher education.

In a recent survey by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, about 60% of college presidents nationwide are approaching retirement age, indicating a significant leadership transition in many institutions.
