CLEVELAND — Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry is recovering after suffering a broken nose and facial fractures from a fastball thrown by Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers. The team placed Fry on the injured list and he spent the night at the Cleveland Clinic for observation. Outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez has been called up from Triple-A to fill his spot.
In the chaotic bottom of the sixth inning, Fry tried to bunt for a hit. However, he missed, and the ball struck him in the face. Manager Stephen Vogt shared that Fry remained conscious and was alert as trainers attended to him. “He’s in a lot of pain, but he’s going to be okay,” Vogt reassured.
Fry was first taken to Lutheran Medical Center before moving to the Cleveland Clinic. He was released the next day and is now recovering at home, with family traveling to support him.
Right after the incident, Fry flashed a thumbs-up while lying on the field and later joked with teammates, saying he should’ve used his bat instead of his face. This light-hearted spirit reflects his selfless nature, as teammate Steven Kwan noted. “It’s tough to see someone who means so much to the team in pain,” Kwan said.
Fry has been a crucial player for the Guardians, especially last postseason when he hit key home runs. He’s battled back from Tommy John surgery that limited his play this season to designated hitter duties.
The Guardians have had a strong performance recently, winning 16 out of 18 games to erase what was once a 15.5-game AL Central deficit. Their win against Skubal and the Tigers ties them at the top of the division.
