Warner Bros. faced challenges with the last batch of superhero films, including duds like “The Flash” and “Aquaman,” which led to major losses. In 2022, Zaslav brought in James Gunn and Peter Safran to revamp DC Studios. Together, they crafted a 10-year plan filled with interlinked stories, including upcoming projects like “Supergirl” and a reimagined “Wonder Woman.”

Zaslav expressed confidence in this new direction: “I hired James and Peter to breathe new life into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises.” Their goal is to balance honoring the DC legacy with fresh, engaging narratives.

Zaslav compared his search for new leadership to finding a figure like Kevin Feige from Marvel. He saw potential in Gunn, known for directing “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Zaslav felt Gunn could connect deeply with the characters, making him the right choice for this reboot.

Opening weekend success is promising, but “Superman” needs to keep the momentum going, especially with a $225 million production budget. Other recent movies like Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” started strong but quickly lost audience interest. In contrast, 2013’s “Man of Steel” began well but didn’t maintain excitement for DC’s next chapter.

Despite potential challenges, Zaslav was in high spirits. He said, “This weekend, we watched Superman soar.” He looks forward to upcoming DC releases in the next year, with projects like “Supergirl” and “Clayface” coming soon.
