Parliament Winter Session Update
Today, important bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha. Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of Law and Justice, presented the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2025. Meanwhile, Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan introduced the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025.
Some Members of Parliament voiced concerns over the education bill. Congress MP Manish Tewari and TMC MP Saugata Roy criticized the speed at which it was being pushed through, claiming they hadn’t been given enough time to study it. In defense, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju suggested it might be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further examination.
In another development, Rijiju called for an apology from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. He accused some Congress workers of making threats against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a recent rally, calling this behavior “unfortunate” and harmful to democracy.
There’s also a proposal on the table to repeal the MGNREGA and replace it with a new rural employment law called the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin). This new bill aims to increase the guaranteed wage employment for rural households from 100 days to 125 days a year. However, this change could place a heavier financial burden on state governments since it includes provisions for shared funding.
These bills reflect significant shifts in policy, particularly in education and rural employment. As the sessions continue, it will be interesting to see how these proposals develop and how MPs respond.
