ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Day 8 of Broncos training camp brought fresh energy. Players shined in a more scrimmage-like practice, rather than the usual routine. Fans saw exciting plays, including an interception by Pat Surtain II and impressive throws from Bo Nix.
Coach Sean Payton switched things up, focusing on game situations and mixing in special teams. “Getting out of our normal routine is valuable,” he explained. “In a typical practice, it’s easy to focus narrowly. But when the situation changes, it challenges everyone to think.”
This approach simulates real game scenarios, where players must adapt quickly. Payton noted that mental agility is critical. “It’s like starting small and then broadening your focus. The next play can shift everything on the field,” he said. He believes this prepares the team well for future challenges, including joint practices and the preseason.
Several stars made their marks on Saturday. Nix completed multiple passes, showcasing his skills, including a great throw to Courtland Sutton in the end zone. Zach Allen, who signed a four-year extension recently, made a notable tackle for loss. Rookie Riley Moss also had standout moments with impressive deflections.
Surtain, last season’s Defensive Player of the Year, recorded his second straight interception. “Creating turnovers can sometimes be random,” Payton stated, praising Surtain’s talent. “But he maintains his focus, regardless of the opponent.”
Interestingly, Surtain’s determination is fueled by a conversation with Hall of Famer Steve Foley. Foley holds the franchise record for interceptions with 44. “I asked Pat how many he has,” Payton recalled. “Learning about those records motivates him. He wants to be great and is incredibly coachable.”
Data from last season backs up Surtain’s prowess. He tied his career high with four interceptions, a testament to his skill and preparation. As training camp progresses, players like Surtain are setting the tone for both their individual success and the team’s future.
