Dean Cain Warns James Gunn’s ‘Immigrant’ Superman Label Could Backfire at the Box Office: Is Hollywood Going Too Far?

Dean Cain, the actor who portrayed Superman from 1993 to 1997, recently expressed concern over the direction of the iconic character in James Gunn’s new movie. Cain worries that the film may align with what he calls a “woke” agenda, particularly after Gunn emphasized Superman’s immigrant background. This has drawn criticism, especially from conservative circles.

Cain stated, “How much will Hollywood change these characters to fit current times?” He believes adaptations like replacing the original Superman motto of “truth, justice, and the American way” with “truth, justice, and a better tomorrow” misses the mark. According to him, beloved characters shouldn’t be altered drastically. If new ideas emerge, he suggests creating new figures instead.

He also mentioned the concept of America being immigrant-friendly but stressed that there should be rules for entry. He stated, “You can’t come in saying, ‘I want to get rid of all the rules in America.’ There have to be limits.”

Many voices in the media echoed Cain’s sentiments. After Gunn’s remarks about Superman being an immigrant, some conservative pundits vowed to skip the film. Fox News even coined the term “SuperWoke” to describe it. Kellyanne Conway chimed in, saying audiences don’t want ideological lectures at the theater.

Cain shared his disappointment, saying that labeling Superman’s story as an “immigrant thing” might hurt box office numbers. He admitted his excitement for the film but expressed reservation about the political undertones.

In response to the backlash, Gunn remained unfazed. In an interview with Variety, he stated that his film promotes kindness. He also addressed critiques by saying, “I think it’s a movie about kindness, and that’s something everyone can relate to.”

Sean Gunn, James Gunn’s brother and co-star in the film, commented on the backlash as well. He argued that rejecting immigration contradicts American values, affirming that Superman’s storyline is inherently supportive of immigrants.
