Images released in that study showed the galaxies scattered rather than linked. Unfortunately, the viral image did not accurately reflect their findings.
As of February 2026, researchers updated their study, revealing that the Cosmic Vine is part of a larger protocluster that includes 136 galaxies. These galaxies are not physically interconnected as the viral image suggests; they’re still quite far apart, despite being part of the same overall structure.
The speculation around the Cosmic Vine has caught the attention of social media users, with many drawing parallels between the arrangement of these galaxies and the double helix structure of human DNA. However, scientists clarified that the visual representation we see online may have been an artistic interpretation or even AI-generated, not an actual depiction.
According to Nikolaj B. Sillassen, one of the researchers involved, “Images of galaxies can be misleading without proper context. The reality is that while they are part of the same cosmic evolution, they exist in a vast expanse of space.” The complexities of gravitational forces and galaxy formation mean that a string of galaxies in a helix form is extremely unlikely.
