In recent discussions around climate change, a major shift has occurred in how experts view future emissions scenarios. An international committee of climate researchers recently published a groundbreaking paper that challenges the long-standing worst-case projections for climate change. This has sparked conversations in various circles, including political arenas.

Former President Donald Trump recently claimed that this paper invalidated previous worst-case projections, arguing it was further proof that concerns over climate change could be exaggerated. However, experts quickly refuted his interpretation. Detlef Van Vuuren, the lead author of the study, labeled Trump’s comments as a “completely incorrect interpretation.”

Historically, scientists had established six emissions scenarios over 15 years ago, with the most extreme being labeled as RCP8.5. This scenario predicted rampant use of fossil fuels and significant temperature increases. For context, the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report estimates that global temperatures could rise between 3.3°C and 5.7°C by 2100 compared to pre-industrial levels.

The recent paper has replaced the extreme RCP8.5 scenario with a new one called SSP5-8.5. According to this updated projection, while the worst-case emissions are now deemed less likely due to advances in renewable energy and climate policies, significant temperature increases are still anticipated. Under the new scenario, global temperatures could rise 3.5°C by 2100 if high emissions paths are followed.

Interestingly, this update doesn’t imply that we’re making significant progress on climate issues. Van Vuuren stressed that even the new worst-case scenario predicting 3.5°C increases would lead to severe climate damage. Moreover, the most optimistic scenario, which once suggested stable warming around 1.5°C, now estimates potential overshoot temperatures of 1.7°C to 1.8°C before stabilizing. This underscores the importance of ambitious climate measures and highlights a more realistic assessment of emissions trends.

Zeke Hausfather, another climate expert, echoed these sentiments, stating that the notion of avoiding overshoot scenarios has been largely abandoned.

In the midst of this scientific discussion, social media has buzzed with reactions. Trump’s comments, along with the paper’s findings, have generated mixed responses online, illustrating the broader public divides over climate change. French climate expert Christophe Cassou emphasized that reducing emissions has been a real achievement, suggesting that past scenarios will still be referenced in upcoming reports, albeit with a fresh perspective.
