Defence Ministry Signs ₹4,666 Crore Deal with Bharat Forge and PLR Systems for Advanced Carbines and Torpedoes

The Defence Ministry has made significant moves to strengthen India’s military capabilities by signing contracts worth ₹4,666 crore with Bharat Forge and PLR Systems. This includes a deal for over 4.25 lakh Close Quarter Battle (CQB) carbines, valued at ₹2,770 crore, meant for both the Indian Army and Navy.

The CQB carbine is a game changer. Its compact design and quick rate of fire make it ideal for close combat situations. This upgrade showcases India’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces, aligned with the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ or self-reliant India.

This collaboration between the government and private industries is not just about weapons. It’s also about boosting local economies and creating jobs. By involving Indian small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in manufacturing components, the initiative aims to build a robust defense industry at home.

In addition to the carbines, the ministry has also contracted for 48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes for the Kalvari Class submarines. This deal, costing around ₹1,896 crore, will enhance the combat effectiveness of these submarines. Delivery is expected to start in April 2028 and finish by early 2030. These torpedoes come with advanced technology, meeting the evolving needs of the Indian Navy.

These steps reflect a broader trend in defense spending. According to the Ministry of Defence, in the Financial Year 2025-26, contracts totaling ₹1,82,492 crore were signed for the modernization of India’s armed forces. This strategic investment aims not only to enhance operational effectiveness but also to position India as a key player in defense manufacturing.

As global tensions rise, countries are increasingly focusing on self-sufficiency in defense technology. The situation echoes historical moments when nations ramped up their military capabilities during geopolitical shifts, highlighting the importance of readiness in uncertain times.

In sum, these contracts mark a notable development in India’s defense strategy, combining advanced technology with local industry support to enhance national security.
