Defence Production Soars to ₹1.51 Lakh Crore: Rajnath Singh Highlights India’s Growing Global Reputation for Defence Innovation

The Indian defence sector is making significant strides toward self-reliance and sustainability. Recently, HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) pledged an interest-free advance of ₹435 crore to YIL (a partner company), and BDL (Bharat Dynamics Limited) committed to delivering up to 3,000 metric tonnes of products over the next decade. Additionally, a new Metal Bank is being set up at MIDHANI to ensure that defense projects have the materials they need without interruption.

Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister, introduced several exciting initiatives. Among them is the HAL R&D Manual, designed to boost research and development through digital solutions and partnerships with universities. This push is a key step away from simply assembling foreign designs towards creating homegrown technology, aiming for national technological self-sufficiency.

A noteworthy initiative called SWAYAM, which focuses on sustainable defense manufacturing, was also launched. This program is part of the Comprehensive Energy Efficiency Action Plan (CEEAP) 2023. It outlines strategies for improving energy efficiency, increasing renewable energy use, and lowering carbon emissions in defense production. Digital tools, such as the SWARNA Dashboard and the DPSU Energy Efficiency Index, are set to support these efforts.

In a significant achievement, IOL and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) were recognized for using 100% green energy. IOL made the switch to renewables in September 2025, cutting emissions by 8,669 tonnes, equivalent to substantial financial savings. BEL, which is part of the Navratna DPSUs, became the first company to reach the RE100 milestone, eliminating its Scope-2 emissions entirely.

Rajnath Singh expressed pride in the DPSUs’ innovations and commitment, affirming the vision of making India not just self-sufficient in defense but a global manufacturing powerhouse. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among defence public sector units (DPSUs) in achieving these goals.

Lastly, the newly established DPSU Bhawan symbolizes this collaborative spirit. This modern facility is intended to foster innovation among all 16 DPSUs, promoting teamwork and open dialogue.

The push toward self-reliance in India’s defense sector represents a significant historical shift. In the past, India relied heavily on foreign technology and materials, but now there’s a concerted effort to build internal capabilities. According to recent reports, this trend toward indigenous production not only enhances national security but also stimulates local economies.
