Defence Secretary Unveils £450 Million Military ‘Surge’ to Strengthen Ukraine’s Defense Efforts

The UK government has announced an additional £450 million in military support for Ukraine as it teams up with Germany to host a meeting of 50 nations in Brussels. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of this support, stating that it aims to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end his invasion.

Healey noted, "We must step up to deter Russian aggression by bolstering Ukraine’s defences." The aid package includes funding for hundreds of thousands of drones, anti-tank mines, and vehicle repairs. The UK will contribute about £350 million, while Norway will provide extra funding through the UK-led International Fund for Ukraine.

Out of the £450 million package, £160 million is earmarked for the maintenance of military vehicles and equipment already supplied to Ukraine. The initiative also includes a "close fight" military aid package, more than £250 million worth, featuring radar systems and additional drones.

Healey pointed out that "2025 is the critical year for Ukraine" and the goal is to ensure Ukrainian fighters have what they need to succeed. He warned that neglecting the ongoing conflict could jeopardize peace.

The announcement comes on the heels of a £1.6 billion missile deal for Ukraine announced last month, along with a £2.2 billion loan supported by frozen Russian assets. However, some critics, like the Liberal Democrats’ defence spokeswoman Helen Maguire, argue that this latest support is insufficient, advising the government to seize Russian assets in the UK for more funding.

The upcoming meeting marks a shift in leadership; the US previously chaired the Ukraine Defence Contact Group until Trump’s presidency. Now, Healey is taking the lead, reflecting a changing landscape in European security matters.

As the talks unfold, Ukraine remains active on the ground. Recently, President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that Ukrainian troops are operating in Russia’s Belgorod region. The conflict continues as both sides exchange drone strikes, with Russian drones attacking Ukrainian targets and Ukrainian forces engaging in the Kursk region.
