The Delaware Blue Coats are teaming up with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield for a special event: Mental Health Awareness Night. This exciting game will take place on February 7, when they face off against the Wisconsin Herd at 6 p.m.
To mark the importance of mental health, the Blue Coats will temporarily change their name to “Yellow Jackets” and wear bright yellow uniforms. This vibrant look ties back to the yellow ribbon, a symbol of suicide prevention. The team will auction these unique jerseys online from February 7 to 14, with all funds going to SL24: UnLocke the Light.
Tim Vessel, the president of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in Delaware, emphasized the importance of mental health in our community. He stated, “We want everyone to experience not just a fun game but also gain awareness about mental health resources available to them.” This message resonates deeply, as mental health is increasingly recognized as a vital part of our overall well-being; a recent survey showed that nearly 1 in 5 Americans suffer from mental health issues each year.
Blue Coats President Larry Meli shared how this game creates an opportunity to discuss important topics. He noted, “It’s vital that we get fans thinking about mental health, and we’re glad our partners help us in this mission.” This effort goes beyond the court; local organizations will set up booths at the game, making resources accessible to fans. Participating groups include Amanecer Counseling & Resource Center and DE Community Legal Aid Society, along with many others committed to mental health support.
Zach Ryan, Executive Director of SL24, emphasized the event’s goals. He remarked, “Mental Health Awareness Night is about community and showing that no one is alone in this. Open conversations about mental wellness can break down stigma, especially among the youth.” Social media trends indicate a growing acceptance of discussing mental health; hashtags related to mental health awareness have seen a 300% increase in usage over the past year.
Tickets for this meaningful event are available at Ticketmaster, with some courtside seats still up for grabs.
