Delay in Vande Bharat Sleeper Rake Launch: Indian Railways Postpones Prototype Testing – What It Means for Your Travel Plans

New Delhi, India: Indian Railways has decided to postpone the launch of its new Vande Bharat Sleeper train. This delay means travelers will have to wait longer for these much-anticipated sleeper trains to start operating fully.

Sources indicate that the first Vande Bharat Sleeper rake, previously used for trials, will not be put into regular service. This decision stems from ongoing adjustments needed to ensure safety and passenger comfort meet Indian Railways’ high standards.

Manufactured as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the Vande Bharat Sleeper rake aims to transform overnight train travel. It boasts modern interiors, noise insulation, and improved ride comfort. However, Indian Railways wants to ensure everything is perfected before launching the service.

This cautious approach highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to safety and quality. According to Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, “While this delay might frustrate some travelers, it reflects a responsible approach by Indian Railways. Getting everything right for the Vande Bharat Sleeper is crucial before rushing into service.”

The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are expected to eventually replace older trains like the Rajdhani, offering passengers faster and more comfortable overnight travel. Features may include automatic doors, advanced suspension systems, and better seating arrangements.

Though no new launch date has been disclosed, industry insiders suggest that the wait might extend into late 2025. Factors like testing, manufacturing, and feedback integration will influence the timeline.

These trains are likely to operate on major routes such as Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Kolkata, significantly reducing travel times. While passengers may need to exercise patience, this delay underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to creating a safe, efficient, and future-ready rail network.
