During a recent event in Lagos, Ms. Abena Biney, Chief Sustainability Officer at Deloitte West Africa, urged everyone to practice responsible recycling. She believes this is a key step toward protecting our environment and ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.

Biney spoke at “Deloitte’s Earth Day Community Sensitization Walk” in Gbara, Jakande. She highlighted the need for better waste management strategies and changing how individuals view recycling. “As a company, we prioritize climate action through our WorldClimate strategy,” she noted. “Together, we can tackle climate change and protect our precious resources, especially our water bodies.”

Lagos is particularly vulnerable to flooding. Poor waste disposal practices, like dumping in waterways, heighten these risks. This situation requires everyone—communities, businesses, and governments—to work hand in hand for a sustainable future.

To celebrate Earth Day, Deloitte’s team, along with climate activist Doyinsola Ogunye, organized a clean-up event in the Gbara community. Local leaders joined in, showing a united front in the face of environmental challenges.

April serves as a time for global leaders and activists to collaborate on sustainable development and climate solutions. The urgency is growing as climate change impacts become more evident, threatening not only human existence but all forms of life. A recent report from the World Bank indicates that Nigeria generates around 32 million tons of waste yearly, with each person contributing approximately 0.51 kilograms daily. This number is likely to increase if action isn’t taken.

Being aware of these statistics is the first step. Adopting better habits can significantly benefit our environment. Collective action is crucial, not just for today but for our shared tomorrow.
