Delta Dental of Illinois recently made a meaningful impact by volunteering at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Their efforts focused on supporting kids facing food insecurity through the Backpack Program, which provides weekend meals to families in need.
On April 3, a dedicated team from Delta Dental came together at the Food Bank’s West Suburban Center in Geneva. They packed thousands of oral health kits, essential for children’s dental care. Each kit contained a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and an easy-to-understand guide about maintaining oral hygiene.
This initiative is part of a broader partnership. Earlier this year, Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation contributed a $15,000 grant to bolster the Backpack Program. This funding helps supply approximately 13 pounds of nutritious, shelf-stable food in each backpack, ensuring children have meals over the weekend.
Lynn, the HR director, expressed the company’s commitment: “Every employee gets eight hours of paid volunteer time a year. We love working with organizations like the Northern Illinois Food Bank to create a positive impact.”
For many team members, the experience was personal. Krystal, a contract analyst, shared, “You never know when you might need help. Helping families in need drives me to give back.” Crystal, an auditor, was emotionally moved by a video highlighting a family benefiting from the program. “It really shows how much it takes to make a difference,” she said.
According to recent statistics, nearly 1 in 6 children in the U.S. face food insecurity. This highlights the crucial role organizations like the Northern Illinois Food Bank play in supporting vulnerable communities. Their work goes beyond food; it includes initiatives for overall well-being, like promoting good oral health.
Chris Easley, a development officer at the Food Bank, emphasized, “Partners like Delta Dental help us nourish families while promoting health. Together, we’re building a stronger future for our community.”
