Delta Seniors for Climate: A New Voice for Action on Climate Change
A new group, Delta Seniors for Climate, is stepping up to raise awareness about climate change. They aim to spark conversations and promote action in the community.
This local chapter is part of a larger national initiative focused on building a network of seniors committed to creating a sustainable future, free from fossil fuels. Diane Ockerman, one of the founders, emphasizes the urgency of their mission: “We need to act now; later is too late.”
The group was created last fall and has quickly gained momentum, growing to nearly a dozen members. They’re reaching out to others in Delta, encouraging both seniors and younger individuals to join.
Ockerman notes, “We’re intergenerational. We welcome anyone interested in raising awareness about climate change.” The group meets monthly and also connects through Zoom for broader discussions with the provincial hub.
Additionally, they focus on educational opportunities. In February, they began an eight-week course led by Dr. Martin Bush titled “The Changing Climate: A Canadian Perspective.” This course aims to illuminate the causes of climate change and discuss potential solutions such as clean energy.
Upcoming events include a talk with former federal environment minister Steven Guilbeault and climate writer Bill McKibben, who founded Third Act, an organization for those over 60 focused on climate action and democracy.
Their activities aren’t just about learning; they also advocate for climate issues. They plan to meet with local politicians to push for policies that prioritize the environment.
According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), urgent action is required to limit global warming. The report states that we are at a critical juncture, and the next few years will be crucial. This context makes the work of groups like Delta Seniors for Climate even more significant.
As the climate conversation grows, local responses will be vital. By engaging various age groups and encouraging dialogue, Delta Seniors for Climate is hoping to break the silence surrounding climate change and promote actionable solutions.
