Demand for Data-Driven Climate Policies: Advocacy Group Calls on Government for Effective Action – EnviroNews

The Media Awareness and Justice Initiative (MAJI) recently urged the Nigerian government to make use of data to shape climate policies. This call came during a forum in Port Harcourt on July 25, 2025, where civil society groups and environmentalists gathered to discuss climate action.

MAJI’s Executive Coordinator, Mr. Onyekachi Okoro, highlighted the forum’s focus on “Strengthening Data for Climate Action in Nigeria.” He stressed how important data-driven decisions are in tackling climate issues. MAJI is set to gather key data and create a baseline document. This document will help track progress and guide future actions.

Okoro pointed out the alarming air quality in Port Harcourt, linking it to fossil fuel production and gas flaring. He noted that emissions from vehicles and machinery also threaten public health. He urged the government to use the available data to develop effective climate policies and enforce environmental regulations.

In addition to policy changes, Okoro called for continuous public awareness campaigns. Educating citizens about the dangers of climate change and the importance of protecting the environment is essential, he said. MAJI aims to support climate justice and promote renewable energy, like solar solutions, to lessen environmental harm.

Mr. Steve Obodoekwe, an environmentalist from the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development, also spoke at the forum. He expressed concern about air quality in the Niger Delta region. Despite frequent discussions about land and water pollution, Obodoekwe argued that air pollution is often ignored, even though it seriously impacts health.

In a world where climate change poses increasing risks, data has never been more vital. According to a recent survey by the World Health Organization, air pollution accounts for about 7 million deaths each year globally—underscoring the necessity of focused efforts in Nigeria. As communities rally for cleaner air and healthier environments, initiatives like MAJI’s could pave the way for a more sustainable future.
