DePaul Athletics Shines at Rocket Invitational: Five Victories Fuel Excitement!

TOLEDO, Ohio – Senior Hannah Smith kicked off the Rocket Invitational with two impressive singles wins on Friday. The competition began bright and early at 9 a.m. CT at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.

In her first match, Smith faced Anastasia Akuginova. After a tough first set where she lost 4-6, she turned things around, winning the next two sets 6-3, 10-6. Freshman Clara Nilsson also had a thrilling match. She won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second 1-6. In a tightly contested tiebreaker, Nilsson held her ground and won 10-7, sealing her victory.

Helin Alvarez had a quick win in her match against Iva Jankovic, finishing with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Yasemin Pehlivan fought hard but lost 6-2, 7-6(2) to Neha Guru in the first singles session. However, she bounced back in her second match at 1 p.m. CT, defeating Iva Jankovic 6-3, 6-1.

Smith’s final match saw her dominate Jone Ibanez, winning 6-0, 6-1. However, the doubles matches didn’t go as well for the Blue Demons, who lost all three contests on day one. Smith and Nilsson put up a fight against JJ Scholten and Guru but fell short, losing 6-4.
