Moscow’s streets were tense on Friday as Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev, a top figure in Russia’s military intelligence, was shot multiple times. The attack happened at an apartment building in northwestern Moscow. Alekseyev, 64, was rushed to the hospital after suffering injuries to his foot, arm, and chest.
Alekseyev has held a significant position in the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency, since 2011. He earned the Hero of Russia medal for his involvement in military operations in Syria and was recently seen on TV with Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, during a notable standoff in Rostov-on-Don.
This incident follows intense discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Just a day prior, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators, alongside their U.S. counterparts, concluded talks in Abu Dhabi. The talks were aimed at bringing an end to a war that has persisted for nearly four years. Vladimir Putin was briefed on the attack and stressed the need for enhanced security for senior military officials.
In response to the shooting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested it was a “terrorist act” by Ukraine, aimed at sabotaging peace efforts. Unconfirmed reports suggest the assailant may have disguised themselves as a delivery person.
This incident is part of a troubling trend. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has accused Ukraine of multiple high-profile attacks, including the assassination of military leaders. In December, a vehicle bomb killed Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian Armed Forces’ Operational Training Directorate. In April, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was also killed in a bomb attack.
Interestingly, a pattern has emerged regarding these attacks. Some individuals involved, including a man who admitted to one attack, claimed they were linked to Ukraine’s security services. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has hinted that targeting top Russian military figures could be part of a broader strategy, reinforcing the idea of “justice” in the conflict.
While the shooting of Alekseyev is significant, it’s essential to recognize it’s part of a larger narrative.
