Two standout players from the Chargers have received recognition for their exceptional performance in the 2025 season.
Derwin James, Jr. and Del’Shawn Phillips were both named to the Second-Team All-Pro list, as reported by The Associated Press on Saturday.
James earned his spot as a slot cornerback, while Phillips was honored for his contributions on special teams. This marks James’s second consecutive year as a Second-Team All-Pro, adding to his impressive resume of five All-Pro selections overall. Previously, he received First and Second-Team honors in 2018 across different positions as well.
The 29-year-old James has excelled since coach Jesse Minter joined the team. He recorded 94 total tackles this season, ranking second on the team, alongside seven passes defended, two sacks, and six tackles for loss. His performance also included three interceptions, tying his career high; it’s the most he’s had since his rookie year in 2018.
As a consistent team captain, he leads by example. Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh praised him earlier this season, saying, “When he breaks down the team, three words: ‘Be the best.’ That’s the standard he sets.” Harbaugh acknowledged that James inspires everyone to strive for excellence.
James’s statistics highlight his elite status among his peers. He finished third among all safeties with 13 total pressures and logged 34 total stops—crucial moments that disrupt offensive plays, according to Pro Football Focus. His coverage skills were also noteworthy; he achieved a career-best passer rating of 68.4 when teams targeted him this season.
In a league filled with talent, James continues to prove himself as a top performer. Recent data shows that many fans are rallying behind him, taking to social media to celebrate his achievements and calling for more recognition for his efforts on and off the field. As the Chargers look ahead, having strong leaders like James will be key to their future successes.
