Des Moines School Superintendent’s Education License Revoked After ICE Arrest: What It Means for the Community

The superintendent of Iowa’s largest school district, Ian Roberts, has recently lost his education license. This follows his arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Roberts, who began his role in Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) in July 2023, was detained during a targeted operation by ICE. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Roberts, originally from Guyana, was arrested because he had a “final order of removal and no work authorization.”

ICE officials stated that Roberts possessed a loaded handgun at the time of his arrest. They are investigating how he acquired it. His educational license was revoked by the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners shortly after. In a letter addressed to Roberts, the board indicated they had received information about his legal status, stating that he could no longer hold a license to operate in Iowa. He has until October 28 to appeal this decision.

Prior to his time at DMPS, Roberts was the superintendent in Millcreek Township, Pennsylvania. His background includes being the son of immigrant parents from Guyana and growing up in Brooklyn. The school board expressed that he has been an important part of their community, but his legal issues have raised significant concern.

Roberts previously disclosed a past firearm charge related to a hunting rifle during the hiring process. The district assured that they had conducted a comprehensive background check at that time and believed he was eligible to work.

Jackie Norris, the president of the Des Moines school board, pointed out the complexity of the situation, stating that while Roberts was a respected leader, serious questions remain about his ability to fulfill his role legally. The school board aims to gather more information before deciding on next steps.

This incident has sparked discussions on social media about the implications of his arrest and its potential impact on the school district’s future. Many parents and community members are concerned about the leadership vacuum and how this may affect students.

As of now, Roberts remains in custody, and the school board is preparing for a special meeting to address the evolving situation. This case highlights an ongoing debate about immigration laws and their unforeseen consequences on public figures.
