Detroit Businesswoman Launches Inspiring Health Training Center: A Journey of Resilience and Empowerment for Students

DETROIT – Today marks a special occasion for a local businesswoman in Detroit.

Annette Anderson is opening a new health professions training center, made possible by a grant from Detroit’s Motor City Match program. Her journey to this point is truly inspiring for many students at the center.

Annette, a former teenager mother and high school dropout, never let her past stop her. Her story is a beacon of hope for students looking to carve out successful careers.

At 1st Step Healthcare Training, located on Detroit’s northwest side, students like Ta’nia Patton are gaining the skills they need to become certified nursing assistants.

Recently, the center celebrated a new group of graduates. Under Annette’s guidance, students are preparing for rewarding technical careers in healthcare.

“Every day, I walk in and think, ‘I created this,’” said Annette, filled with pride.

With a $20,000 grant, Annette turned her vision into reality, although the path was anything but smooth. At 15, she became pregnant and dropped out of high school. But Annette didn’t give up; she earned her GED and became a certified nursing assistant.

Her hard work didn’t stop there. With determination, she advanced her career to become a registered nurse. Now, she motivates others, like Asia Brown, who received a scholarship for training at 1st Step Healthcare.

“Hearing her story really touched me and pushed me to work harder,” said Asia. Annette’s journey shows how mentorship and perseverance can lead to success.

At 1st Step Healthcare Training, Annette is determined to create new opportunities for her students. “No matter where you come from or what challenges you’ve faced, you can achieve your dreams if you work hard. I’m here to help you succeed,” she said.

Her CNA boot camp program lasts four weeks, and in just its first year, the center has already graduated and certified 70 students.
