Deuce Knight’s Game-Changing Decision: What Auburn’s QB Says About His Future with the Tigers

Auburn quarterback Deuce Knight is planning to enter the NCAA transfer portal, as reported by On3’s Pete Nakos. Knight, a former five-star recruit, had an interesting freshman season.

During his first year, he threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns in just two games. His standout moment came in a start against Mercer on November 22. In that game, he completed 15 of 20 passes for 239 yards and rushed for 162 yards, totaling six touchdowns.

This impressive performance contributed to Auburn’s dominant 62-17 victory, highlighted by a 75-yard rushing touchdown and a 91-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Simmons. Interim coach DJ Durkin praised Knight, saying, “It was awesome to see his teammates rally around him.”

Auburn’s season, however, took a turn. Midway through, the university fired former coach Hugh Freeze and brought in Alex Golesh from USF. Knight had initially committed to Freeze’s coaching team in December 2024. Overall, Auburn finished the season with a disappointing 5-7 record and a 1-7 mark in SEC play.

Before joining Auburn, Knight was a highly touted recruit, ranked as the No. 25 player and No. 5 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class according to Rivals. He was also the top-rated player from Mississippi.

As the NCAA transfer portal opens on January 2, players like Knight will have 15 days to enter their names and connect with potential new schools. Players on teams in the national championship game will get an extra five days, with a deadline of January 24.

The transfer portal has become a significant aspect of college football, with many players choosing to switch schools for better opportunities. In 2023, over 1,000 players entered the portal, showcasing a trend towards mobility in college sports. This shift not only affects player careers but also impacts team dynamics and recruitment strategies.
