Devastating Earthquake Strikes Myanmar and Thailand: Alarming Casualties Expected as Structures Collapse

A powerful earthquake hit central Myanmar on Friday, shaking the region and causing significant destruction. Roads were torn apart, centuries-old temples were damaged, and multistory buildings collapsed, all while the nation grapples with ongoing civil unrest.

Although the exact number of casualties is unclear, experts have raised alarm over the potential toll. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates the death count could exceed 10,000, especially considering the high population density near the epicenter, just outside Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. Initial reports from Myanmar’s military government confirmed at least 144 fatalities and 732 injuries across three cities, excluding those from Mandalay.

The earthquake, recorded at a magnitude of 7.7, even affected construction projects over 600 miles away in Bangkok, Thailand. Officials reported at least eight deaths there, with dozens of workers missing from a crew of 320 involved in building a new structure for the Thai government.

This earthquake was noteworthy; it marked only the third of its kind to strike the area in a hundred years. The USGS located the epicenter just 10 miles from Mandalay, a city with about 1.5 million residents. Just minutes after the initial quake, a significant aftershock of 6.7 magnitude was felt, followed by several more tremors.

Historically, the region has experienced devastating earthquakes, but the recent civil turmoil complicates rescue and recovery efforts.
