Devastating Earthquake Strikes the Philippines: 69 Lives Lost and a Nation in Mourning

Teresito Bacolcol, the agency’s director, warned that rainy weather makes the region more susceptible to mudslides. “This was really traumatic to people,” he noted, stressing the exhaustion from dealing with both a storm and an earthquake in quick succession.

Historically, the Philippines has always struggled with natural disasters. Positioned on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” it faces around 20 typhoons annually, along with frequent earthquakes. Recent statistics show that from 2000 to 2021, the country experienced nearly 80 significant earthquakes, making safety a pressing concern.
