Devastating Myanmar Earthquake: Death Toll Surpasses 1,600 as India Launches Vital Relief Operation

Mandalay/New Delhi: The aftermath of the recent earthquake in Myanmar has been devastating, with reports indicating that over 1,600 lives have been lost. In response, India has launched ‘Operation Brahma,’ sending 15 tonnes of relief supplies and rescue teams to assist the affected regions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, expressing India’s condolences and commitment to support during this challenging time. “As a close neighbor, we stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar,” Modi shared on social media, emphasizing the urgency of the humanitarian aid efforts.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar detailed the operations, announcing that Indian naval ships, INS Satpura and INS Savitri, are en route to Yangon with 40 tonnes of humanitarian supplies. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also dispatched an 80-member search and rescue team to assist in recovery efforts in Nay Pyi Taw. They are equipped with specialized tools, including rescue dogs trained for detecting survivors in collapsed structures.

The Indian Air Force has played a crucial role in this relief mission. A C130J military aircraft successfully delivered essential items like tents, blankets, water purifiers, and medical supplies to Yangon. Two additional aircraft are being prepared to transport more aid, including sixty ambulances, to support the ongoing operations.

The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, not only affected Myanmar but also shook neighboring Thailand, causing widespread damage to infrastructure. As rescuers continue to search for survivors, the government of Myanmar has announced that the casualty numbers may still rise as reports come in.

Historically, India has been a swift first responder to disasters in the region. Previous deployments include missions to Nepal after the 2015 earthquake and to Turkey earlier this year. This established track record reflects India’s commitment to disaster relief in South Asia.

As the situation unfolds, the Indian embassy in Myanmar is coordinating with local authorities to facilitate ongoing assistance. They have also made efforts to reach out to the Indian community in Myanmar, underscoring the importance of safety for all nationals abroad.
