Devastating River Erosion in Kurigram: The Disappearance of Critical Infrastructure

The Rivers Dudhkumar and Tista have caused severe damage in Kurigram, washing away at least 55 homes and other structures over the past few days. Those affected are seeking shelter, some in others’ homes and some outdoors, as nearly 50 more houses remain at risk of erosion.

In Baniapara village, families are frantically trying to salvage their belongings. Monsona Begum, a housewife, returned home to find her house, including its boundary wall and tube well, already gone. Heartbroken, she and her children are now heading to her father’s house for refuge.

In Rajarhat upazila, the swift rise in Tista River’s water level has destroyed 16 homes and four semi-pacca mosques. Approximately 5 acres of farmland have also eroded, further impacting local agriculture.

Chairman of Jatrapur Union Parishad, Abdul Gafur, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the Dudhkumari River rapidly expanded in Baniapara. Ismail Hossain, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, visited the impacted areas and promised assistance to the victims, along with measures to prevent future erosion.

Rakibul Hasan, an executive engineer from the Bangladesh Water Development Board, mentioned that they are currently placing G.O. bags at the erosion sites to help stabilize the banks.

Moreover, recent rainfall from upstream in India has inundated around 2,000 hectares of farmland in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts, particularly affecting rice crops. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre reports that while major rivers are currently below danger levels, more rain may cause levels to rise in the coming days.

This erosion crisis highlights the ongoing challenges of climate change and its impact on vulnerable communities. As water levels shift unpredictably, families like Monsona’s face uncertainty about their homes and livelihoods.
