Fresh off the heels of Steam banning the horror game Horses, the platform is facing more controversy. The gacha game BrownDust2 has announced it will not launch on Steam due to Valve’s “policy requirements.”
Neowiz and GAMFSN, the companies behind BrownDust2, shared their decision on their official site. They explained that after much discussion, they concluded that some aspects of the game could not align with Steam’s guidelines while preserving its core quality.
In their statement, they expressed gratitude to fans who were eagerly anticipating the Steam release. They noted:
“We have been preparing for a Steam launch for a long time. However, during coordination with the platform’s policy requirements, we encountered an issue that cannot be reasonably resolved with the current version of the game. After internal discussion, we have decided not to proceed with a Steam release.”
They also reassured fans that they would distribute previously announced rewards, like community event bonuses related to Steam, after a December update. The team is now looking for alternative PC platforms more suited to BrownDust2‘s content.
Currently, speculation suggests that the game’s NSFW elements may be the issue, though there’s a plethora of adult content available on Steam. It’s worth noting that many other titles manage to navigate similar waters successfully.
Gaming industry experts have pointed out that censorship and platforms’ content moderation policies can significantly affect game developers. Such scenarios often pressure creators to alter their products, potentially stifling creativity. According to a recent survey by the International Game Developers Association, over 30% of developers said they’ve changed their game features to meet platform requirements.
The balance between creative freedom and regulatory compliance remains a hot topic in gaming today. As developers like Neowiz search for platforms that allow their vision to shine, this situation highlights the ongoing challenges within the industry.
