Dhaka Enjoys Fresh Air: Healthy Air Quality Reported for Two Days Running!

Dhaka, the bustling capital of Bangladesh, recently ranked 80th for poor air quality, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 47 early Sunday morning. Interestingly, this score falls into the “good” category, marking the second consecutive day of healthy air quality. On Saturday, however, it slipped to 84th place with an AQI of 50, which is classified as “moderate.”

Understanding the AQI can help us grasp air quality’s impact on health. When the AQI ranges from 50 to 100, the air is generally acceptable. However, individuals with sensitivities should limit outdoor activities when it hits between 101 and 150. Scores between 150 and 200 are unhealthy for everyone, while readings above 301 are considered hazardous, posing serious risks to health.

Globally, Dhaka is not alone in dealing with air quality issues. Cities like Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jakarta in Indonesia, and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia topped the list with AQI scores of 195, 162, and 157, respectively.

The AQI system in Bangladesh tracks five harmful pollutants: PM10, PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone. Unfortunately, Dhaka has struggled with air pollution for years, especially during winter months. The rainy season tends to bring some relief.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is a silent killer, responsible for about seven million deaths globally each year. The health impacts range from strokes and heart disease to serious lung conditions.

Awareness of air quality is crucial. Users on social media often share their experiences, discussing how pollution affects daily life. Staying informed about air quality can help individuals take necessary precautions, especially in an urban setting like Dhaka.
